Meet us for an outdoor tour experience in the futuristic 5 K long addition to Copenhagen, called Ørestad. On this guided Ørestad bike tour we will show you a bouquet of spectacular contemporary architecture, huge green expanses, art, playgrounds and exquisite spots.
Back in the 1990s it was decided to extend Copenhagen with a new district called Ørestad. The area is located on the island of Amager and is connected to downtown, Cph Airport and Malmø/Sweden via the metro and the Øresund railway crossing the Øresund Bridge. Although the first residents and companies moved here after the millennium it is still a development city area, which originally was planned to house 20.000 inhabitants and 80.000 employees.
Being the largest crossroad to Scandinavia, Ørestad has throughout the years been criticized for it´s modernist planning approach favouring real estate development, huge scales and infrastructure. This resulted in wide, windy spaces and void of human life. To account for such mistakes the overall plans have been changed several times and these years it seems like the life between the houses and the density is improved through playgrounds, greenery and other small scale projects.
On our tour we start in Ørestad North to explore the University of Copenhagen´s Campus area with it´s splendid outdoor spaces and student accommodations. We continue towards south, while passing strict and curvy shapes, diverse structures, styles and colours, price winning social housing projects as well as land art, sustainable initiatives and public institutions. On our way we will have time for our guided introductions, for photos and a break to consume the local beverages and snacks we brought.
The bike ride ends at the modern masterpiece, The 8 House, designed by the world famous Danish architect, Bjarke Ingels. The building contains 474 homes, divided into town houses and penthouse apartments with private gardens as well as regular apartments, playful public areas, shops and cafés. And it is located right on the threshold to Kalvebod Common´s huge protected areas. From this point you can decide to continue exploring nature on your own or join us on the 15 minutes short cutting bike route back to where we started at Islands Brygge metro station.
The tour takes 2,5 hours and the price is 3600 DKK for 1-7 pax including beverages and snacks. We kindly ask you to bring your own bike (eg from your hotel/bike rent), which will provide you with the opportunity to explore Amager Common nature resort on your own afterwards. If you want us to book a table for your lunch we will be happy to help with this. We recommend Restaurant 8-tallet with the scenic view, serving you open faced sandwiches.
