Until the mid 1800s Østerbro was mostly known as a green countryside with grazing cattle and inns along the coastal road leading people further North. But during the industrialization entrepreneurs settled in the area, either in big newbuilt villas or fashionable apartment buildings – and the workers in newly constructed public housing nearby their factories. The population on Østerbro was growing dramatically and in the late 1800s an enormous landfill extending the coastline was launched. This extension became the new industrial port area of Copenhagen, and for over 100 years Nordhavn/The North Harbour served as an important trading hub of Northern Europe.
On this guided tour we will show you our favourites of Østerbro: We will stroll towards a former dark working class street, now a hip zone with renovated apartments, coffee shops and one of the best pastry shops in town. An old tram depot is a true throwback clashing with the hectic and iconic junction nextdoor – as well as with the huge green park of Østerbro, Fælledparken. Here kids play soccer, youngsters meet for a beer and adults stroll or practice other outdoor activities on the footpaths lined up with benches – all set for a little break. But it was not always this peaceful here…
Nearby the park we will show you two State of the Art examples on healthy Danish architecture created for the working class after the huge cholera epidemics 150 years ago – the buildings and areas now ranks among the absolute favourite places for most Copenhageners to settle down. Talking about health, Østerbro also houses the national soccer stadium, a local stadium and a bunch of tennis and soccer lanes, where the locals meet for sports.
On our way towards Nordhavn, the harbour area, where we end the tour in the very heart of splendid new architecture, piers, residentials and exquisite boutiques and cafés, we will tell you the story about how it all changed throughout the years.
The tour can also be organized to only focus on past and present in the harbour area of Nordhavn.
We recommend you to meet us at 10/11 AM, which will give you enough time to enjoy a lunch and all the different new facilities in Nordhavn during the afternoon on your own – but it´s of course up to you to choose the time fitting your itinerary the best.
